Teaching

Northern Helsinki Art School provides basic education in visual arts for children and young people. The teaching is planned according to The National core curriculum for the advanced syllabus in visual arts in basic education in the arts.

The school provides early years education for 4 - 6 year olds. Official basic education in visual arts begins at the age of seven. The structure of the studies is the following:
1) Basic studies in the visual arts 800 academic hours.
2) Advanced studies in the visual arts 500 academic hours.

The aim of the teaching is to provide practical skills together with a further understanding of the visual arts. The teaching is planned according to the age and capabilities of the students. Learning is a process at which the pupil's creative ability, practical skills and comprehension proceed from one level to the next during the years spent at basic education in visual arts.

Apart from basic education in visual arts, the school arranges a wide range of workshops for families, summer classes as well as a workshop for adults.

The teachers are qualified art teachers and visual artists with educational qualifications.

 

About the school

Northern Helsinki Art School was founded in 1986. The school is run by Northern Helsinki Art School Association´s Board.

The school is supported by the City of Helsinki and the Finnish Ministry of Education.

Approximately 500 pupils attend the school annually. The age of the students varies from 4 to 20 years of age.

Northern Helsinki Art School provides teaching in three locations:
1) Itä-Pakila Ohrahuhdantie 2B, 00680 Helsinki
2) Malmi Malmitalo, Ala-Malmintori 1, 00700 Helsinki
3) Kannelmäki Kanneltalon nuorisotila, Klaneettitie 5, 00420 Helsinki.
